You should not give the general number because it is not a reliable source for you. They know nothing about your skills, experience, relationships at work, and rapport while working there. If you did not have a positive reputation there, perhaps you should not have placed them on your resume or application. But the only number on there should be from the store where you worked. If your new potential employer calls the general number, they will think and probably assume you are trying to hide details and negativity from your work there, bad relationships, poor experience, etc. because they are the ones who worked with you - not the people behind the phone lines..and you don’t want your potential employer to have a bad impression of you before they get the details! Hope this helps! Be honest, and if you did have a bad experience there or a bad rep, honestly explain why and twist it in a positive light! good luck!
